Solicitor or Conveyencer? The Mistake That Could Cost You Thousands

Buying a home will likely be the biggest financial transaction you ever make. And you may only buy and sell property several times in a lifetime, so you will need professional Solicitor help.

Sale contracts are complex and without the right advice, you can make mistakes that set you back years, or even decades.

Which is why it is best to engage a solicitor to help with the contract of sale and the related legal advice, rather than the cheaper alternative of a conveyancer.

What is the difference?

Conveyancers are there to facilitate the transfer of property (its conveyance, if you will) and make sure contracts are prepared and signed properly.

Conveyancers will help you understand the paperwork involved with your purchase. They can prepare the contract of sale, explain what it means to you, check properties for any council infringements and even help arrange building and pest inspections.

However, they cannot give you legal advice on property law or help you with the terms of your contract.

Hiring a solicitor who offers conveyancing as part of their service will get you access to everything a conveyancer can do, but with the added security that should a legal dispute or issue arise, they will be able to offer you help or advice.

Spend Money For Peace of Mind

If you have just spent a million dollars on a property, it is understandably tempting to choose the cheaper option when taking care of the paperwork, but with an asset as big as a family home, a mistake or oversight could cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars, years of your life and plenty of heartache too. It is not worth the risk, so we recommend you go with a solicitor.
